Our apples used to be picked into wooden cases, which were loaded onto a truck or a trailer to be brought back to the packing shed. These cases were tipped onto grading tables by hand. We needed a tractor with spiked steel wheels to get up and down the steep hillsides, especially when the clay was wet.
Then, for many years apples were picked loose into apple trailers. These were tipped towards the grader in the packing shed...that happened in the space we now use as a stall.
Now we pick into wooden bins carried on forks on the tractor, or pick small amount into plastic crates.
