Monty's Surprise is a large square-ish apple with patches of red stripes. It is sweet/tart when ripe but is always a good cooker, even if a green. Research has shown that this apple has very high levels of compounds that are known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. (Hetlina is the only other apple like this). Monty's Surprise was found growing on a roadside in Wanganui, New Zealand in 2000; the original tree was about 90 years old. We pick it in April.
