Before there was Royal Gala, there was Gala. Gala is sweet and crisp. It is pinker and tastier than Royal Gala. It is often modest in size. It can be picked about a week or two before Royal Gala, but develops more flavour if left to tree-ripen. Gala was bred in New Zealand in 1934. It is a Kidd's Orange Red and Golden delicious cross. We pick them in late March or early April.
